Civil Rights Dealt a Blow in NY Senate

Marriage equality was screwed over yet again yesterday here in New York. In a 38-24 vote, the state senate voted down a bill that would have made same-sex marriage legal.

While not completely shocking to me considering some previous losses in recent months, I’m amazed that we’re even still having this argument at all. Gay rights are civil rights. I cannot believe that there is even a question about this. How can anyone be against some Americans not having the same basic rights as others and think we live in a fair democracy?

I urge you to contact your legislators and tell them that equal rights are equal rights and we all deserve the same treatment.

For those of you in New York, here is a blog posting that has the names and email addresses of the DEMOCRAT senators that voted against the measure yesterday. Please email them. Hopefully they will get the message and realize they need to get their positions in line with what the people want or face getting ousted in the next election. The days of being elected by liberals simply because you call yourselves Democrats are long gone. We need to put people in office who act, not just talk.

If you’re in New York (and specifically the NYC area) and are involved in the performing arts community, be sure to check out Broadway Impact. This is a great advocacy group started by Gavin Creel (of Hair on Broadway) and some other folks. There’s a mailing list and they are very active in the city.

Wisconsin Domestic Partnership Registry

Congrats to my friends Michael and John on their big day yesterday. I’m very proud of Wisconsin for being progressive enough and heading on the right path to marriage equality for everyone. It’s still going to be a long climb, but we’re making steps. Check out this video from the local FOX affiliate in Green Bay. Mike and John are featured pretty heavily.

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!

This isn’t actually about the election or anything (however, I am very happy about the outcome. Sad about Prop 8 in California, but happy about President-Elect Obama!)

I have a fun announcement about a personal accomplishment. I have finished the famed “mystery creative project” that I have been working on for a couple of months now. I won’t go into full details, because with these kind of things it’s best to play your cards close until you make some real progress, but I’ll fill you in a bit.

I have finished writing a pilot script for a television show that I am developing. It’s been a very personal project for me, and something that has been very important in the last few months. I let it languish a little bit then lit the fire under my butt to get it finished and I set some goals for a timeframe. I am happy to say that I (almost) met those goals and have a complete script in my hands. I’m going to push really hard to get something going with this over the next few months and will keep you posted when it’s the right time to release more details.

VOTE!

Hey everyone,

This cold is really sticking with me and I’ve been slowly getting better. I have fun things to write about from the last few weeks and I hope to do that tomorrow. In the meantime, I have a very important message for anyone reading this:

VOTE!

It’s just about midnight here in New York and fortunately for me there’s a polling place right across the street, so tomorrow morning I will be heading over and voting in what may be the most important election in our lifetime. I’d love to say I don’t care who you vote for, just that you vote, but that’s a lie. I urge you all to support Obama for president. The thought of a McCain/Palin administration for the next 4 years sends shivers down my spine. Please, PLEASE, if you have any doubt in your mind, please go online (see links below) and check out both candidates’ websites and see for yourself. I think that any sane person who looks at the facts will see that Obama is the correct choice. Vote. VOTE!!!! Every vote counts. John Kerry lost by just a small handfull of votes in Florida in 2004 and it proves that everyone’s voice is important.

Also, I got the copy of the script for my reading today, so that’s exciting. I have lots of lines and singing and stuff. More on that soon!

p.s. did I mention VOTE!!!

Palin’s big shoppin’ trip!

Well, the VP candidate that I love to hate is up to it again. Politico.com is reporting that in the last month or so, the RNC paid for “campaign accessories” in the amount of about $150,000. That’s right $150,000!!!!! Whatever could these charges be? Surely it’s for food for needy children or something to bring the country out of this recession that it’s headed in, right?

Saks 5th Avenue in St. Louis & New York: $49,425.74
Neiman Marcus in Minneapolis: $75,062.63

That’s right folks! They’re buying Sarah and her family clothes and accessories for the campaign trail. A lot of high-end clothes and accessories. They also spent $4,716.49 on hair and makeup in the last month!

Check out the Politico.com article. You can see even more line items, including over $4,000 at a men’s store, and baby clothes and a stroller for the littlest Palin.

Then….this is great! The campaign issued this statement:

“With all of the important issues facing the country right now, it’s remarkable that we’re spending time talking about pantsuits and blouses,” said spokeswoman Tracey Schmitt. “It was always the intent that the clothing go to a charitable purpose after the campaign.”

So, they’re saying that this is a small issue and had no real relevance to the campaign and they media should back off from covering it because it’s no biggie? I agree. After all, it’s not like the GOP has been poking and prodding at the William Ayers connection with Obama. I mean, that’s another fact that has been completely blown out of context, harshly criticised even though the facts point to it being completely insignificant and having absolutely no relevance to this election. Oh, SNAP! That’s exactly what they’re doing! Plus it’s not involving $150,000 of election funds that may possibly be in violation of elections rules.

Oy!

The Final Debate

Well, tonight was the final debate between McCain and Obama. I couldn’t help but yell at the television several times. It’s sad but kind of amusing to see McCain struggle the way he did. If I didn’t already think he wasn’t fit to be president, I would have changed my mind after tonight. He was unable to show any restraint, acting childish at times. He interrupted Obama, rolled his eyes and made crabby faces. His arguments continued to focus on Obama and every time he was asked a question about his policies, he took the time to make some smart-ass remark about Obama. I can’t say strongly enough how much I hope he never makes it into office. I urge everyone reading this to vote this year. This election is so important and every vote counts. If you don’t know where your local voting office is, need to get registered (if it’s not too late where you live), or check the state registry to make sure you’re on the list, you can check out http://maps.google.com/vote. It’s a great resource to find your closest polling place and get links to your local elections office.

The Great Schlep [NSFW]

Hey everyone, this is a video I came across a few weeks ago. It’s brilliant. Basically Sarah Silverman is urging all the Jewish folks out there with grandparents in Florida (a key state in this election) to fly out there and convince their grandparents to vote for Obama. I know some people have strong opinions about Sarah Silverman, but I love her and I love this video. Please note that there is some slightly naughty language in it, so don’t watch at work if you don’t want the f-bomb dropped.
