Marriage equality was screwed over yet again yesterday here in New York. In a 38-24 vote, the state senate voted down a bill that would have made same-sex marriage legal.
While not completely shocking to me considering some previous losses in recent months, I’m amazed that we’re even still having this argument at all. Gay rights are civil rights. I cannot believe that there is even a question about this. How can anyone be against some Americans not having the same basic rights as others and think we live in a fair democracy?
I urge you to contact your legislators and tell them that equal rights are equal rights and we all deserve the same treatment.
For those of you in New York, here is a blog posting that has the names and email addresses of the DEMOCRAT senators that voted against the measure yesterday. Please email them. Hopefully they will get the message and realize they need to get their positions in line with what the people want or face getting ousted in the next election. The days of being elected by liberals simply because you call yourselves Democrats are long gone. We need to put people in office who act, not just talk.
If you’re in New York (and specifically the NYC area) and are involved in the performing arts community, be sure to check out Broadway Impact. This is a great advocacy group started by Gavin Creel (of Hair on Broadway) and some other folks. There’s a mailing list and they are very active in the city.
